Linux on everything!

2009/10/04 | by ugarro | Categories: KDE

My current work is mostly related to embedded devices with comms, and as such, I read quite a bit about linux on embedded systems on a daily basis. Mobile phone manufacturers are rushing to linux (android), and recently I became proud owner of one such thing. Many gadgets, like gps devices, pda, mobile phones, netbooks, etc. also run on linux these days. But, by no means, when I bought this tv, did I expect the following:

It runs on linux 2.6.18, posix threads, libstdc++, gphoto2, busybox, opera browser and many more parts. (yes, I know some opera browsers run on Qt, but I don't know anything about this one).

One day, at some point, our TVs will run KDE 5, hehe.

So yes, I got a new linux baby at home! ;)

Nice! You now even get Linux where you wouldn't have expected it at all :-P

What I would like to know, could you tell me the name of your new television?^^
I'm also looking for a new TV and a TV running with Linux is a big Pro argument for it ;-)

Thanks :-)

Hi pano, sure. It's a Philips 37 PFL 5604 H. I guess that the rest of TVs of the same series and newer ones will also run linux. You can check that in the shop anyway, checking the documentation included in the TV.

Hahaha, you never knew?

I worked on that stuff during my internship at that company last year, pretty cool huh?

Ah, lucky you Casper, yes it's pretty nice. Is there any open specs for the hw? (ie, can I do some coding for it? ;) ). Any open source code pack would do too, hehe

Nice, did not know that. But I did know that a number of the Sony Bravia TVs (KDL/KVL-series) run Linux. http://products.sel.sony.com/opensource/source_tv.shtml

Thanks ugarro and Jon Nordby.
I see that our new Sony KDL-40S5100 uses open source (GPL). But we did not notice any on-screen GPL information. I'll look again.

I don't think there is an open stack available for the TV's, there is a specialized stack for the TV's, so you can't really do anything on it...

Shame. Uhm, then maybe I'll have to break it appart and reverse engineer the hw ;)

I'd be curious to find out if you have exercised the offer for source code and if they gave you the complete and corresponding source that is offered on the screen shot. Please get in touch if you don't mind. Thanks!

Hi,

I've been taking a look to this TV and it seems the port 80 is open in TV. Take a look to this:

************************************************
serfer2@Betty:~$ sudo nmap -O 192.168.0.100

Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2009-10-31 03:05 CET
Interesting ports on 192.168.0.100:
Not shown: 999 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
80/tcp open http
MAC Address: 00:80:5A:23:AC:16 (Tulip Computers Internat'l B.V)
Device type: general purpose
Running: Linux 2.6.X
OS details: Linux 2.6.9 - 2.6.28
Network Distance: 1 hop
*************************************************

A web server is running on the TV but I couldn't connect to it. It resets the connection.
Any idea?

regards ;)

Hello,

I have download the last firmware from Philips (http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?mid=Link_Software&ctn=22PFL5604H/12&scy=US&slg=fr) but it's only an unix exec file with extension .upg

Don't know if we can do any thing more with that.

Try telnet'ing to it (telnet 192.168.1.100 80) and see what comes back.

@darwinsurvivor: Tried that already with my father's Philips 37PFL8404H. Unfortunately it closes the connection immediately, too, without any data being sent:

> telnet 192.168.0.189 80
Trying 192.168.0.189...
Connected to 192.168.0.189.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

No other TCP ports (not even unusual ones) seem open.

Hi Unai, I have purchased one of those and I also was surprised with the Open Source licenses. Do you think that there is a way to improve the instaled software, like a matroska player?.

I'm a complete inexperienced in linux, but I suppose we can compile an upg firmware updater.

Si quieres me puedes escribir al e-mail del comentario, por si hay alguna manera de hacerlo.
